Locos - Industrial

These kits have 3D printed bodies, chassis and detail parts - additional parts such as wheels and motor may be needed depending on the kit. See individual details for more.

TS31 - Ruston 44hp (prototype 48DS)
Prototype 48DS (as built version)
Ruston built this loco in 1936, after trials it was sold to Heinz and the design would eventually turn into the 48DS. All the photos of the loco from its time at Heinz show a slightly different radiator - both types are available, please specify which you'd like when ordering. The kit runs on a Hornby Ruston 48DS chassis (not included) and re-uses the footplate - see the build video here for more details.

Price and availability: £20 (no longer available unless we can find another manufacturer)

TS32 - Freelance 30hp Planet
About as small a loco as you can get?
This loco is based on the 20hp narrow-gauge industrials of the 1920s, only larger and to OO scale. It uses the well-regarded Hornby Ruston 48DS chassis (not included) with only minor modification to remove the DCC chip. The kit comes with the fixing nuts required to use the Hornby chassis, but the builder will need to source their own coupling hooks, driver, brake handle and wire. A build video is available here.

Price and availability: £20 (no longer available unless we can find another manufacturer)

TS10 - Manning Wardle Class F
[image]

This 10" cylinder loco was common with industrial concerns, contractors and even some mainline users. This loco is depicted as SECR no 313, which operated Folkestone Harbour for a while after being purchased from a contractor.

The kit consists of the body, chassis, roof, motor, gears for a 1/8" axle. The builder needs to add 12mm wheels, crankpins, pickups etc. The valve gear needs to be scratchbuilt, which is difficult to get right, as well as setting up the conrods.

TS16 - Hunslet 4wDM
The smallest UK standard gauge Diesel! Motorised!
The Hunslet 22hp 4-wheel Diesel Mechanical was built from 1935 onwards for light shunting duties - one famously worked at Courage brewery and is preserved at the Middleton Railway, Leeds.

This kit consists of a body, roof, chassis, motor mount and spur gears. It requires some scratchbuilding for the cab framework and is fiddly due to its small size. Needs motor, worm gears, 10.5mm wheels, pickups etc.

TS19 - AEC Shunter

This 78hp Diesel shunter was built by AEC in 1938, and worked at AEC until the site closed in 1979. It has since been preserved.

The kit consists of body, chassis, roof, motor mount, motor and gears for a 2mm axle. The builder needs to add a motor, worm gears, 13mm wheels, pickups etc.

TS20 - Howard 8-ton
Petrol shunting locomotive
Howards of Bedford produced a range of locos in various tonnages and power ratings from the mid-20s onwards. This loco is believed to be an 8-ton, 45-57hp model. Used widely in industrial concerns for light duties.

This kit consists of a body, roof , chassis, motor mount and spur gears. The builder will need to add 12mm wheels, worm gears, pickups, motor, coupling hooks etc.
